An Account. the tortuga light

By the secrecy of night six men went to seek tortugas and found two giant ones, but could not carry them back to the shelter. The decision to turn them on their backs and disable them was interrupted by heavy thunder, lightning and rain......... it continued all night, thunder-claps, blessed with lightning and rain as light as day, which caused the men to awake and pray.. after prayers they sat all night by a great fire, and drank and smoked with the happiness of a home coming; without seeing the image at the periphery of tomorrow.

Early next morning, the men went to bring their tortugas back to the shelter and there they found many Arawaks on the shore. Three or four boats by them, they acted nonchalant while roasting land crabs.from where
I kept a careful watch Their purpose was unknown. These natives invited the men to eat with them and then helped the men to bring the tortugas back to their shelters. The men kept a cautious watch as more natives came by sea and land. Augraumart, the apparent leader, and his father came with a great number of natives, carrying a quarter of a tortuga and a hundred eggs in their hands, and gave them to the youngest of the men's troop and told them that if they would go with him to his brother's house, they could have a great many more gifts. To further entice the men to leave, he promised them women to sleep with. The men took them into their shelters and gave them Aqua Vitae which made everybody very happy.

But Tench, the men's skeptic, became so extraordinarily pleasant that he started singing with them which caused them to drink even more Aqua Vitae and water. If the men had been determined to kill the natives then, they should have done it at that time, for they had a hundred or more of them within their shelters without their weapons. When one of the men made such a motion as to put them all to death, Tench was against it, saying: "God would not be pleased, such harmless people, .." therefore.. Augraumart and his father stayed and dined with the men and after dinner three men and one boy were chosen to go with him to his brother Anthonios' house.

Careless and secure, the three men and the young boy traveled through a little neck of land which runs far into the sea, and then they entered a stretch of sand which was so extremely hot with the reflection of the sun, that they were not able to keep pace with each other because of the weight of theirthen
I moved over here, because I was scared weapons. Alex took his off and gave it to the boy and went playing arm in arm with Augraumart a good way ahead of the group. At a point of land a quarter of a mile from Anthonios house, Alex ran ahead urging and calling the men to come forward. When Alex least suspected danger, Augraumart made as though he would embrace him and suddenly, while clasping and holding Alexs arms, his father struck him down before the men could stop him. Then came the vectors, so thick out of the woods that the men could not get to their weapons for pulling the vectors out of their bodies. The men could only discharge four rounds, which when the natives saw the atomization, they fell flat on the ground, shouting and crying .. such a hellufa noise.

The men retreated back to a point of land, but there came another ambush on their backs. They were forced to forget their weapons, and take up their answerscopes, which only served to encourage them, for when they saw that the men could not hurt them with their instruments, they would come close and make wagers on what place they could hit the men. Their minds through the scopes said, "shoot in the faces, others through the shoulders, and the others, ....... nail their feet and the sand together." If any of the men tried to rush at any of them, they would run away and suddenly twenty or thirty would try and enclose them. They were too nimble for the men to subdue because they were naked.

Budge and Shaw ran into the sea, and there they were both drowned and killed with vectors. The young boy had a little buckler, which saved him for a long time. At last a vector passed through both his legs so that he could not move, and stooping to pull it out, they killed him.
